- The Art of the Start by Marketing Evangelist & Venture Capitalist Guy Kawasaki is a presentation worth listening to. The idealist in me was drawn to this point: "I found out that the companies that are successful start out to make meaning, not money"
- Seth Godin, has a Bootstrapper's Bible: "The e-book Bootstrapper’s Bible is a must-read for any entrepreneur. It’s a 100 page ebook that takes about 2 hours to read, but it’s time well spent."
- And while I can't say I'm generally fan of the guy, "grand strategist" Thomas
Barnett raises an eyebrow of disbelief over the academic view that discounts the role of business in society.
- Somewhat questionable, apparently some journalist thinks that there's merit to learning business secrets of the Mafia (figures that it's the Guardian)
- Of course, why bother with the Mafia when you can learn to innovate like the makers Warcraft?
- Whatever you do, maintain a sense of urgency in your startup - something I can attest is not easy to do.
- If you're going to raise money, some thoughts on Term Sheets and Angel Investors. More here.
- The growth of entrepreneurship on college campuses bodes well for the future of the US.
- Picking the right partner is definitely not an easy thing (speaking from unfortunate experience). David Alison, an entrepreneur offers his thoughts. My personal advice? There's no such a thing as an equal partnership - make sure that ownership structures also reflect this. Disagreement is inevitable - just make sure there are clear paths to resolution.
- Another note of caution, Fred Wilson, a VC laments the broken paths to "liquidity" and longs for another way. I don't agree but it's an interesting point of view particularly from a VC. On a somewhat related note, some additional ideas to how a web based startup can make money other than advertising.
- Matt Maroon founder of DraftMix points out only some of the reasons why you might not want to build a startup.
